3 shorts about… first dates

I’ve never really understood or celebrated Valentine’s Day. To me, February 14th is first and foremost my brother-in-law’s birthday, and I don’t think he enjoys sharing this special occasion with the couples who book all the tables at his favourite restaurant.

My cold cynical heart always melts for good animation though, and I will take any excuse to share short films that I love.
Because meeting your soulmate isn’t always a walk in the park, today’s selection focuses on first dates that don’t go as planned, awkward encounters and lonely characters in search of a deep connection.

It’s a Date, by Zachary Zezima (2016)

Zezima’s striking short film is an experience that stays with you. The colours are vibrant, the uncomfortable conversation rings true, and the fragmented timeline adds an aura of mystery to this otherworldly story (based on a real anecdote! – you can read more about it in this interview.)

Les Mots de la carpe, by Lucrèce Andreae (2012)

Beyond having one of the coolest names I’ve ever heard, Lucrèce Andreae is a very talented animator who’s currently developing her first feature film. Her graduation short from the French school La Poudrière revolves around a speed-dating event — a somewhat dated setup that yet translates perfectly to today’s world of online dating (ruthless and often disappointing). These vignettes are full of brilliant visual ideas, and the made-up language gives the film a universal quality.

Luke and Lotta, by Renata Gąsiorowska (2012)

Cone-girl Lotta and pear-boy Luke don’t have much in common, but they try their best on their night out. This lofi animation (with rich backgrounds full of fun details) is both sweet and a bit depressing. The characters are cute and expressive despite their deadpan tone and the relatable situations contrast with the dreamlike environment. A good reminder that sometimes it’s not you, and it’s not me either.
